Way of Style to the Way of Teaching

Androgynous Generation

By: Charissee L. McKee

If you have been keeping up with today’s runway shows you probably have noticed there are more men than usually in this industry, which is normally dominated by women. Don’t let your eyes fool you. Today we are seeing more female models dressed as males and now we are seeing male models dressed as women. 1

We know that many people are not ready for this change especially for male models, but that isn’t the concern for parents. They believe androgyny could pose as a problem for the development of children. On the contrary, androgyny will create social equality. 2

Girls wear pink and boys wear blue, but hasn’t our society stated numerous times real men wear pink. So what’s the problem? The problem is that society still pushes social norms and forces social roles on children. Our society is not ready to accept an individual who cannot be distinguished as a male or female whether it be within the way they dress, appearance or behavior. 3

Girls aren’t supposed to be aggressive. Boys aren’t supposed to be compassionate. Girls shouldn’t wear baggy shirts or masculine suits and boys aren’t supposed to dress femininely. 4

Many teachers have begun to eliminate gender roles and teach children about androgynous identity. They are not teaching them to necessarily dress like the opposite sex, but they are teaching girls to be assertive and boys to be sensitive. Children will encompass both feminine and masculine qualities. Society’s social norms are holding us back from bridging that social gap. 5

“Although they are not codified in written law, we have very strict rules about socializing boys and girls. Violation of these rules may not result in jail time, but it does result in more-than-casual condemnation by everyone from close family members to complete strangers,” said Michael K. Meyerhoff, Ed.D, executive director of the Epicenter Inc. 6

In middle school, I witnessed girls dressing like boys. It was my first encounter with deviance against social norms. They not only dressed like boys, but they were just as aggressive and assertive as boys. It was intimidating for males at that age. Those girls were teased, mostly by other girls, but most of those girls who dressed and acted a little different were at the top of our class. 7

It has been noted that, women who are assertive and confident, but who can turn these traits on and off depending on the circumstance get more promotions than either men or other women (Turner, Forbes). 8

Teaching our children both genders characteristics will be beneficial for them in the future. We would no longer have to force social roles on children if we teach them equally and there wouldn’t be confusion for children if they were taught to embrace others who are different. 9

Mandy Wilson, Blogger, LGBT Advocate and bible study teacher, teaches her student to be accepting of others differences according to the bible. “We teach them how to react. Don’t we? We either shelter them from people who are different or we expose them to the diversity of this world. We can teach them to either point fingers and view differences as a negative thing, or we can allow them to ask question and then provide answers that teach them how to view others who are different,” said Wilson. “Do not judge, or you too will be judged? For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. So, lets teach kids the right way to judge,” said Wilson. 10

With mainstream media picking up on this ongoing trend, there will be more fuel added to children’s curiosity. There are ads with women dressed like men and brands like Tomboy that are androgynous based now being highlighted in mainstream media. It shows that mainstream media and the fashion industry are socially accepting androgyny and it does not look like it is going to go out of style. 11

The goal with androgyny is social equality amongst men and women. In the future we will see more well-rounded adults who will be assertive and compassionate. We should encourage our children to be the best versions of themselves, build confidence within them and not limit their growth. If we continue to teach our children to be content with societies social norms how will our society become socially equal? Children are the future. 12

If you notice that I’m different
Don’t take it personally
